Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival – Bujumbura

When you arrive at Bujumbura International Airport, our guide will meet you and take you to your lodge so you can unwind and spend the night. If you have time, you may also visit a supermarket for a quick snack shop and a forex bureau to exchange money.

Day 2: Boat Cruise on Rusizi River – Visit of Lake Tanganyika.

After breakfast, you’ll head to Rusizi National Park for a boat excursion where you might spot monkeys, antelopes, hippopotamuses, and numerous other beautiful bird species. Before spending the night at the lodge, you will visit Lake Tanganyika for a beach meal afterward.

Day 3: Visit Kibira National Park.

After an early breakfast, you will depart Bujumbura for your ultimate primate walk in Kibira National Park, which is home to 98 mammal species, about 200 bird species, and twelve different species of primates, including several families of chimpanzees, baboons, red-tailed monkeys, and black colobus. You will return to the lodge for rest and overnight after your trek.

Day 4: Visit the Gishora Drum Sanctuary.

Our guide will provide advice on the best time to depart to take in one of Africa’s best drum shows based on the timing of the event. The drums served as the cornerstone of the monarchy’s political authority in Burundi. Specialised families known as “Abatimbo” made and beat them on special occasions in significant locations. They announced national events such as the monarchs’ funerals, the sowing festival, and the royal coronation, and they provided the rhythm of the seasons.

Day 5: Bujumbura City Tour – Departure.

Following breakfast in the morning, you will travel to Bujumbura for a city tour. Originally founded as a German military base in the early 20th century, Bujumbura is home to several notable sites, including the meeting place of Burton Speke and Livingston, the Bauhaus architectural style, monuments honouring heroes of democracy and independence, and everyday life. You won’t regret spending time in this energetic city of Burundi, and you will eventually be transferred to the airport for your next adventure.
